CARROLLTON, Ga. (AP) — Austin Smith connected with Alec Pell for a go-ahead 1-yard touchdown with 1:23 remaining and Austin Peay beat West Georgia 20-16 on Saturday.
Courtland Simmons scored his first career touchdown with 32 seconds left in the third quarter to give Austin Peay a 13-10 lead. West Georgia took the lead, 16-13, when Davin Wydner found Karmello English for a 56-yard touchdown pass with 7:17 remaining.
On the winning play, Smith eluded pressure from the right side and found Pell wide open in the end zone. UWG got into Austin Peay territory before turning it over on downs at the 35 in the closing seconds.
Smith was 13-of-24 passing for 116 yards and he added 49 yards on the ground, including a 15-yard keeper for the game’s first touchdown. O’Shaan Allison led Austin Peay (2-4, 1-2 United Athletic Conference) with 95 yards rushing on 15 carries.
Wydner completed 33 of 47 passes for 388 yards for West Georgia (1-4, 0-4). English made seven catches for 132 yards. T.J. Lockley and Dylan Gary also each had seven catches, and the pair combined for 154 yards receiving.
